How do Chinese College Students Eat Hot Pot?

Recently, iResearch Consulting released an Insight report on Hot Pot consumption behavior of College students in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen in 2020, focusing on the hot pot consumption trend of students in China’s first-tier cities. The following information is an excerpt from the report, which provides a glimpse into the hot pot preference of Chinese college students.

Among the college students who eat hot pot, the ratio of male to female is 53.4% and 46.6%. Compared with women, men consume more hot pot.

Among the people surveyed, 41.7% consumed hot pot at least once a week, while only 4.5% consumed hot pot once a month or less. This shows that hot pot is high-frequency consumption for college students.

However, due to the limited financial ability of college, as many as 50.5% of the students are attracted by the promotion and discount activities of hot pot restaurants, while only 25.9% do not care about the cost.

Having hot pot takes a long time, with 50.8% of respondents spending 1-2 hours at a time, while only 1% will finish eating in less than 30 minutes.

In terms of per capita consumption, the average cost is 94.2 yuan, and 66.6% of college students spend less than 100 yuan per meal on hot pot.

Sichuan and Chongqing hot pot is the most popular eating method among students, with 54.2% choosing it. As for other kinds of hot pot, consumer preferences vary widely. For example, Shenzhen students show a high interest in Chaoshan beef hot pot.

Generally speaking, the top three hot pot brands that most loved by college students in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen are Haidilao hotpot, Xiabuxiabu, and Xiaolongkan.
